Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,
I am appealing to drop SOCY 384 (Spring, 2021) and SOCY 389 (Summer, 2021). During the previous school year, with the pandemic severely affecting my mental health, I only took four courses the first semester. This allowed me to succeed in these courses and not feel overwhelmed while receiving treatment for said mental health issues. I had assistance with academic considerations, which was very helpful at that point in time. The second semester I took five courses which resulted in me failing one due to be overwhelmed. This summer, I decided to take two courses so that I would be able to finish my degree in 4 years. In the beginning, I had full intentions of completing these courses to my full academic ability, but my mental health only got worse. Mid-June, I was hospitalized and had to take a break from my other responsibilities, including my job and my summer courses. I believed I would be able to turn things around and get back on track to complete these two courses, but I was wrong. My doctor advised me to drop these courses, but I had already missed the deadline, and academic considerations were not enough to help with the state I was in. I am currently receiving treatment and focusing on getting on the other side of this so I can return for the 2021-2022 school year. My academics mean a great deal to me, and it is difficult to lose sight of the student I once was. I am speaking with a therapist regarding my mental health, focusing on successfully handling workloads and coping with stress. I believe dropping these courses is necessary for my process in my mental health battle and using the time to seek the help needed so I can continue my academics in the future.
Best,
Leah Tomlinson
