Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to drop GEOL 200 (July-Aug, 2021) without a financial penalty. The official drop date for this course without academic penalty is July 30th, so I would be able to drop this course without negatively impacting my transcript, however it would be greatly appreciated if I were granted an appeal to waive the financial fees. I am a student registered with QSAS due to mental health conditions which negatively impact me both academically and socially. In the past school year, I have been prescribed medication, been hospitalized twice, and developed stomach ulcers due to my condition. At the moment I am already taking two courses (May-July) and the addition of GEOL 200 (July-Aug) has become overwhelming, which I did not initially realize which is why I did not drop the course prior to July 9th (the last date to drop without financial penalty). I am also quite stressed financially at the moment due to COVID and if I were able to drop GEOL 200 without a financial penalty, I feel that this would greatly benefit my mental health. Please let me know if that would be possible.
Many thanks,
Lillian Burke Simpson

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: If I were granted an appeal on GEOL 200 so that I could drop the course without a financial penalty, I would plan to take a summer course in the summer of my third year to make up the credits. I think that without the stress of a third course I will also be able to focus on my other two summer courses as finals approach, which would benefit me academically. Additionally, GEOL 300 is not a requirement for my degree so dropping this course would not restrict my ability to graduate on schedule. My academic plan if I am granted this appeal, would be to focus on my current classes and then take a summer course next summer which I would finance with the refund from GEOL 200, if this appeal is approved.
