Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,


I??m writing this letter to ask if there is a possibility I can re-enroll in this course in the fall due to an extenuating circumstance without academic penalty. My dad recently had a mental health incident and attempted to end his own life, and with my mom being out of state I have been occupied with looking out for his well-being. I hope you can understand that this has been mentally and physically draining and I have not been able to learn the content or complete any assignments, although I am genuinely interested in the content of this course and just wish to have the opportunity to be able to give it 100%. I have talked to my clinical psychologist and they have been working with me to better my situation mentally but she believes time off will allow me to focus on my family and she has signed and submitted a Verification of Confidential Extenuating Circumstances form which has already been approved by the office of academic consideration. Currently the office of consideration has granted me a 4-8 week extension but due to the nature of my situation I have not been able to return to work where I was planning on conducting my independent research project which is 50% of the course. Because of this, Dr. Nagel has informed me that I should apply for an appeal for late withdraw instead as my capapcity to finish the course is extremely limited and a delay in the research will force me to complete it without TA or peer revisions. If it is possible to drop the course and enroll again in a later semester, I ask that you please let me know as I would greatly appreciate it under these circumstances.
