Petition Letter: My name is Rebecca Stevenson and I was a first year student in PSYC 100 this year. I would like to submit a formal appeal to review my PSYC 100 final grade as a result of my Winter term ??Peer-Review'' assignment and a possible mistake in entering my marks.
I do not feel as though my final grade reflects my best efforts and knowledge of Psychology. In my Winter term ??Peer-Review'' assignment I feel that I thoroughly covered each aspect of thinking like a Psychological Scientist within my critical analysis and that my media posting contained a proper psychological claim, which the TA who marked my assignment did not agree with, causing me to lose marks. I have brought these concerns to my instructor Meghan Norris, and requested an informal review, but since the 21 day deadline had passed she suggested that I submit this appeal. While preparing for this appeal I have gone back over my grades and found a situation that I feel was never fully addressed or solved. On November 27th, 2020 I emailed my TA about my Fall ??Peer Review? assignment because my grade was 5.3/7.5 which is a 70.6%, converting to a B-, but on the overall score rubric she had entered that I received a C. Her email response was unhelpful only stating that my conversion was correct, but this was never corrected on my rubric, making me wonder if there is a discrepancy in my overall grade.
I found this course to be very interesting but the format in which it was delivered is what I found to be extremely difficult as I am a hands-on learner, making this year of online learning very difficult for me. I understand that this was the case for many students and I really feel as though it had a negative impact on my grades as this learning format created a challenge for me to retain information to the best of my ability. The Covid-19 pandemic causing this school year to be online clearly exemplifies extenuating circumstances, beyond my control, as well as at home distractions such as supporting my mom who was finishing up chemotherapy this year, which when combined created challenges for me regarding my focus and keeping track of this unresolved grading situation.
This appeal is very important to me as my aspirations have changed this past year as I watched my mom go through Breast Cancer treatment, inspiring me to become a Pediatric Oncology nurse. My goal is to apply to Accelerated Nursing programs next year, but most require a minimum grade of a C- in PSYC 100. I finished this year with a D+ as my final grade, which as I have stated I do not agree with, so I am hoping that you can look over my Winter ??Peer Review? assignment and Fall ??Peer Review? grade again in hopes of helping me to reach a C-. I anticipate that with the return to in-person learning this Fall that my grades will increase as C??s and D??s are not typical grades for me and I hope to do far better this year.
I understand that I have missed the 21 day deadline, this is because I originally brought my concerns to my instructor on April 21st, 2021, regarding my Winter Peer Review Assignment and she said that the PSYC 100 team ??will be evaluating grades carefully once the exam grading process is complete to look for any evidence that the course this year is more challenging than in past years. If we find evidence of unintended increased difficulty, we will be adjusting grades at the course-level?. This led me to believe that my concerns were being reevaluated so I continued to wait for their decision, causing the time between the deadline and now to grow and the deadline to pass.
I really feel that these extenuating circumstances have negatively affected my overall academic performance this year, as well as the confusion and disagreement that I have with my PSYC 100 evelautations. I look forward to hearing your response to my formal appeal for a regrade.
Thank you.
