Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean (Academic),

This appeal is to ask that Queen's extend the IN status that was granted to me on ECON250 through to the end of Fall term.

The initial appeal was based on my medical condition that makes manual test taking challenging and unpredictable. This new appeal for an extension to the IN status is based on the time it has taking me to prepare for the manual test along with the Professors own recommendation that I take the test at the end of Fall term, with his next class.

The reasons for my request include the time it is taking to consult with my Doctor and changes to my treatment plan. The plan now includes working with two new personal counsellors; a therapist and an educational coach. As well, Professor Smith had recommended that I take the ECON 250 exam in Fall term as it is less disruptive to his program and better for my preparation.

Dr. Paul Sandor, at the Neurodevelopmental clinic has made changes to my program and also made recommendations which QSAS which have just been implemented to give me 50% more time and requiring the use of computer for all test taking which has yet to be figured out with Professor Smith. I have just started new medical treatment plan and that will take some time for me to adjust to. The shift from manual to computer accommodation won't likely be organized quickly for ECON250 and will take some preparation time for me as well.

Getting professional support from Psychotherapist took time to get started. Therapist Angela Robinson started about 6 weeks ago and is helping a lot but I have not asked her for a letter. I have attached just her invoice to show that I am getting the help I need with overcoming mental barriers. I am new to this program and the mental preparation should make the process of writing the Stats exam possible, but also set me up to deal with the challenges for the next years of school. As you recommended in my last appeal, it is my hope to find someone within QSAS who can set me up with someone to work with on an ongoing basis this fall.

Additionally, I am taking summer term classes as my full-time job. I am just now finishing Math 121 which is a two-term course in 12 weeks. It is much more demanding than I expected and takes about 30 hours a week. I am using it to get better manual skills but with two modules to learn each week, I have been working hard.

My goal is to do well in both Math 121 and ECON 250 courses as they are core to my ECON degree and other opportunities.

I will also start ECON250 practice sessions after my Math 121 course is over with a coach who knows my issues. With your approval, I will have the time I need to cope with the requirements mentally and manually and a better set of skills for the ECON250 final in Fall term.
