Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Faculty of Arts and Science,

I am writing this email to explain the extenuating circumstances surrounding my first level appeal. Due to the effects of the pandemic, I have struggled greatly in regards to my mental health. I had extreme difficulty navigating remote learning throughout the pandemic and found very little success. I found it difficult to ask questions and understand things as well as I did in an in-person setting. I had difficulty keeping up to date with deadlines as they often wouldn??t show themselves in my ?notifications?? tab until it was too late. These are some of the many things that I struggled with during my experience with remote learning.

It was difficult to find help. I didn??t know any of my classmates and had trouble connecting with them through my computer screen. I found it difficult to connect with Teaching Assistants or anyone who could offer guidance through a time where I needed it the most. In regards to mental health, finding counselling was difficult during the pandemic, which was a resource I??ve relied on since high-school. The combination of a lot of these things coupled with the new experience of living in a house away from my parents had a devastating impact on my mental health and my morale.

I considered taking summer courses to help mitigate the damage done to my grades this year, but unfortunately, I work full-time in order to pay for my schooling and was unable to do so. I figured that a change of pace could potentially be helpful in regards to my mental health.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: To improve myself and my success this year, I will utilize counselling, I will be more conscious of taking my medication consistently and on-time, I will be more conscious of deadlines, and I plan to reach out to Student Academic Success Services much more often. I plan to schedule my time better and attend study groups if possible.

Earlier this summer, I had an online meeting with a Student Services advisor who was very helpful and gave me an idea of my options moving forward. I am asking that the classes I failed (ARTH 212, GEOL 104, RELS 163, SOCY 227, SOCY 200) be removed / not be included in my GPA, along with the rest of the courses (LAW 201, GEOL 200, SOCY 210, SOCY 226, PSYC 241) that I wasn??t successful in. I plan to retake most of these courses in the fall if possible.

I want to be a Queen??s Student. I want to succeed.

Thank you for your time,

Nathaniel Bickford (20115600)
