Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Assistant Dean of Arts and Sciences,
I hope I have addressed you correctly above. I am writing to ask you to allow me to remove the courses stated from my record. I understand that the appeal process is intended for students who have had to deal with extenuating circumstances that prevented them from completing the course. In my case, I can only say that I made terrible mistakes due to my unfamiliarity with the enrollment system and requirements.

I am returning to university after 35 years to attempt to complete a degree started at the University of Windsor. I have been a working comedian, actor and author for the past three decades but I have always hoped that I might one day be able to complete my academic studies. The pandemic gave me a great deal of time for reflection and I have decided to try and improve myself in every way I can. I enrolled in the online program at Queen's University to pursue this goal. I was a bit overwhelmed by the enrollment process and my enrollment advisor enrolled me in the two courses above after an email consultation.

Unfortunately, I found that I couldn't arrange to finance the courses and sent an email to my advisor telling her as much. She wrote back and said that I should enrol on a course, WRIT 120, which would start later in the term and give me more time to get myself in order while dropping the other two courses. I agreed.

Here's where I made my incredibly stupid error. I assumed that my advisor, who had enrolled me in the two courses, would remove me from them. She did send me an email (that I admit I misread) which did instruct me I should drop the courses. I mistook her instructions for confirmation that she was dropping the courses on my behalf. I went back to my other work obligations thinking that all had been taken care of. When I logged back on to my Solus and Queen's email, I found that I had been enrolled all along and had failed to complete the courses.

I know this is my own fault. I beg you to have mercy upon a fool and allow me to drop the courses. I would hate for this to be the start of my academic experience, failing before I have properly begun. Attending Queen's University has always been a dream of mine. In future, I will be more attentive to all the requirements and fulfill all my obligations. I throw myself on your mercy.
