Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear faculty members,

I am YIN Yue (student ID: 20213243), a prospective Chinese sophomore in the Art and Science department. I am writing this letter to request to waive the 21-day for my deadline to submit my appeal to waive the requirement to withdraw.

During the past year, I have had a very hard time adjusting to online courses, not to mention my horribly wrong decision of taking all the courses during midnight so as to adjust to the time difference with Canada. Apparently, this incident had such a great impact on my mental health, plus I do not have an amicable relationship with my family members because they often pick on me about my weight, my depressed mood started to accumulate, and even worse, directly caused me not to eat for 28 days straight, starting from approximately 19th January this year (it is not medically certified, and I would not refer it as anorexia, but an extremely morbid diet). Of course, the aftermath of it would be retaliatory eating that lasted until mid-April. I gained back all the weight I lost, and because my mind could not focus on anything else, I failed most of my courses. Since I did all these things secretly, my parents still don't know about this experience of mine, nor do they know that my mental breakdown has already seriously affected my studies.

Since I knew I did not study much for the past year because of this, the grades would definitely not look good on my academic appeals, but on the other hand, I was too afraid of facing this reality since this has never happened before and I was a very good student in high school, I chose to not read any emails I received and deleted them permanently as long as I saw an unread message. That's how I missed the deadline to submit my appeal to waive the requirement to withdraw because I never expected such severe consequences would happen.

To prove my words, since, as I mentioned, I have not sought professional help, you may contact my friend Judy Lee (Li Jiashan 1853415520@qq.com/+8613126921339) for confirmation. She is the only friend I slightly confided in about my psychological situation at that time.

Fortunately, during the past few months of self-regulation and conditioning for healthy exercises, I am able to guarantee with confidence that I am for sure prepared for the new, offline semester (I did not go to a psychiatrist because I still do not want my parents to know these things because it's humiliating and because I do not have enough money). Yet at this juncture, I was informed to be withdrawn from school for a year. If this happens, not only my parents would be furious at me, all the planning I've done for the next academic year during summer will be in vain. Therefore, I'd like to ask for your assistance and permission to let me come back and study at our campus. To assure you, I would write a detailed plan before choosing the courses for the next semesters and write to you. I believe once I come to Kingston, everything will gradually get better.
