Petition Letter: Dear Committee Members,
I am writing to request a late drop of POLS 590 and to explain the circumstances that have led to this request.
I have suffered from chronic Lyme Disease for most of my life, a condition that was not correctly diagnosed until my late teens. This chronic infection syndrome, sometimes known as mitochondrial encephalopathy (ME), shares many symptoms with illnesses such as mononucleosis and fibromyalgia, with the most pronounced being severe, lasting fatigue, and cognitive impairment or ??brain fog.? Though I have had some successful years in remission while at Queens, I was forced to step out completely in my second year, and last winter, I again experienced a significant and extended decline. This resulted in my dropping one course and delaying my thesis work, POLS 590, from the winter to the spring term in the hope I would improve. If anything, my condition only worsened over that time. I have resigned myself to the fact that I will be much longer in recovery than I had hoped.
In consultation with Dr. Kyle Hanniman, Undergraduate Chair of the Department of Political Studies, and Dr. Kyla Tienhaara, my supervisor for POLS 590, it was agreed I should suspend my thesis work until I am again well enough to resume my research, and to retake POLS 590 at that time. I have also attached my documentation from Queen??s Student Accessibility Services, where I have been enrolled since 2016.
I am committed to treatment and confident I will eventually recover. Ironically, the recent phenomena of COVID ?? long-haulers? has led to some increased focus and research into chronic infections that result in ME, giving those of us with this condition some renewed hope that better treatments might be found that might end this roller-coaster pattern of illness and health.
Given the circumstances above, I am asking the Committee to allow me a late drop of POLS 590 so that it will not appear as a failure on my academic transcript. I am committed to completing this thesis project, and with it my degree, when my health finally allows. I have worked hard to achieve a cumulative GPA of 4.03 during my time at Queens and would be grateful if this record not be marred by an F as a result of this illness.
