Petition Letter: Dear Appeal Board of Associate Deans:
My name is Ella Pahal, and I am writing to appeal my physics 118 mark because I experienced an extenuating circumstance during the final exam. I experienced symptoms from getting my second Covid-19 vaccine. I was upset about my mark because it significantly decreases my GPA and chances of being accepted into graduate school. I am writing with the hope that I receive a credit standing for this mark. Thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances.
On August 2nd, I had to get my Covid-19 vaccine. Although I have heard that some people get adverse reactions to the vaccine, I thought I would be ok as I am a healthy young individual and did not feel any symptoms with the first vaccine. This was not the case as on the evening of the 3rd I started to feel incredibly sick. My symptoms included a fever, headache, tiredness, and chills. I wrote my exam on the 4th at 3 pm and at this time my symptoms were significantly worse. My head felt very heavy, and I could not focus as I was so tired and had a pounding headache. My symptoms prevented me from being able to focus on my exam and subsequently resulted in my final mark being a C. I tried to make myself feel better by resting, drinking fluids, and taking Advil but this did not help. Although I felt incredibly sick, I was unsure how much it affected me until I saw my mark and I was very stressed and upset. This mark is significantly different from the rest of the marks that I received in the course and from the rest of my marks in my academic career. I am a very hard-working individual and pride myself on my academic success. I am very upset with the mark I have received in this course and this mark will prevent me from being able to get into graduate school. I am trying to get into Physical Therapy and with this mark being in my last 20 credits it will be included in my sub-GPA. My sub-GPA has been significantly impacted by this mark. I am very stressed, and I believe that this year and a half has been difficult for a lot of us. With the unknown of Covid-19 and vaccines, I don??t want this to affect my future as so much of our lives have already been affected. I had to book my vaccine on that date because that was the only date available for at least 2 weeks. I also had to travel back to Kingston and did not feel comfortable to be traveling without having the vaccine therefore, this was the only date available to me.
I pride myself on my academics, and I am incredibly upset that this mark could affect my future. In the next year, I will focus on my academics, applying to graduate school, and continuing to put all my effort into it. Please understand that this mark is very discouraging to me and my future aspirations and hope that you consider my appeal. I will attach my vaccine card that shows proof that I got the vaccine on the 2nd along with a note from a parent to corroborate my illness. Thank you so much and I am looking forward to hearing your response.
