Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Dean,
I have discussed my examination with my instructors and I had hoped to be fit enough to sit examinations over the summer term. However, this arrangement proved to be impossible due to medical problems.
Since the summer of last year (2020), I had experienced symptoms of vision strain and irritation with bowel pain. Visits to the Doctor proved there were no legions in the bowel. However, there was eye haemorrhaging in the right eye. I visited various doctors to check my body, and they were not sure about the diagnosis. As a result, I found it difficult to concentrate on the text during the first year. Thus, I enclose the medical certificates for relevant periods. Also, I started studies with vision problems and bowel discomfort while studying at university. The symptoms received include extreme fatigue, eye strain, nausea, migraines, abdominal pain and dizziness. My doctors believed that I also contracted COVID-19 like symptoms from the 1st term up to the Summer-term when I had my first injection. I had my second injection recently in September 2021.
My instructor for MICR 270 suggested that I apply for the Aegrotat standing quoting the following:
10.3.1 - Aegrotat Standing
I. Aegrotat estimated standing in a course is reserved for situations in which a student, who has completed and passed at least 60 per cent of the work for a course, but because of illness or other extenuating circumstances beyond their control, is unable to complete all the work of the course (see Academic Regulation 6). Aegrotat grades will be included in the student??s grade point average (GPA) and can be used as credit earned towards a degree program.
II. A student seeking Aegrotat standing in a class must have the written support of the instructor and must submit a formal appeal to the Associate Director (Studies) (see Appeal of Academic Decisions, Section 3). If the request is granted, this estimated letter grade would appear on the student??s transcript together with a note reading ??Aegrotat Estimated Grade.?
III. Students may be granted Aegrotat and/or Credit standing for a maximum of 36.0 units during their entire program.
I have decided to apply for Aegrotat standing in MICR 270, CHEM 281, and GLPH 385. I would request that my GLPH 385 grade would include my final piece of work (essay).
I have applied for numerous examination extensions this year for my subject because of health concerns and lack of medical treatment during provincial and pandemic lockdown periods.
I would also request an extension of the incomplete grade in BCHM 270 to sit the final examination.
Yours sincerely,
Michael Edwards

Appeal Letter
Appeal Letter: Dear Dean, (Dr. Jill Atkinson)
From May 2021 to the end of August 2021, I could not study for examinations set to start at the end of August. The government of Ontario caused lockdowns throughout the year 2021 and the prior year. The doctors could not provide many services over the year due to the absence of provincial healthcare.
The medical reports enclosed confirm that I developed COVID-19 symptoms over the Easter term. I did not receive my second dose until September 5th 2021. (See, the Ontario Government Vaccine Information also)
Although I obtained alternative examination dates, I could not sit them due to severe symptoms until September 2021. Also, I could not get further medical treatment after an optician??s medical appointment in Fall 2021.
Additionally, I can not see the work well enough without sound glasses. The medical report confirms retinal bleeding and eye strain. I spent too much money on private healthcare visits with various private doctors in Toronto. Although I deferred my examinations for this academic year in the hope to solve medical problems, I could not find a doctor to provide the eyecare and new glasses due to annual lockdowns and reduced resources. Around the middle of October to the end of November 2021, my family was sick and went into hospital for six weeks, making regular weekly hospital visits to protect them. Thus, I could not do any real academic work this academic year to reach my full potential for coursework.
I request an extension of an incomplete grade to complete the remaining credits in this appeal. The remaining credits are CHEM 281 and BCHM 270. If there is a possibility for Aegrotat Standing in any course, then I would attempt to sit the examinations as well accept this interim status to meet any regulations and standards at the same time.
