Petition Letter: I'm appealing to drop STAT 263 and MATH 110 to switch them into ECON 111 and MATH 111. I learned that I was not supposed to take STAT 263 if I'm majoring in Statistics. However, the deadline was Monday, Sept 20, which had already passed at the moment. My professor sent me an email about the course but it was the very beginning of the semester and I happened to ignore it because I was too busy to adjust to the new environment and carry boxes to my room. Also, I realized STAT 263 was covering the same material that I learned in a Data Management course in high school. The Data Management course was a university preparation class, which was similar to Advance Placement in my high school. I didn't want to spend my time repeating the same that I already have learned. I couldn't think about dropping the course on Monday because my investment club interview was on Wednesday, so I spent two solid days before the interview to prepare. Monday and Tuesday are the busiest days of my week. I have three lectures, three hours of Physics labtorial, and one Math tutorial on Monday. I also had a Math assignment due Tuesday, so I was juggling everything together at the moment. Since I was too busy to check the email while I was adjusting to the new environment, I couldn't drop my course earlier.
Before I heard how the exam would be, I had an intention to take MATH 110. However, as soon as I heard the instructions for the first exam of MATH 110, I immediately decided to drop the course. This course is certainly out of my control. I was panicking when I heard no formula sheets and calculators were allowed during the exam. I couldn't even understand an assignment without asking questions to a TA every 5 seconds. I attended both tutorials and still spent extra hours to finish an assignment. This was definitely the thing that I cannot handle. I couldn't find any motivation to keep on this course. I couldn't sleep since I was studying to understand class every night. Lectures were not helpful for my understanding of Linear Algebra because I was focusing on writing notes and didn't have time to actually absorb the lesson. I was spending unnecessarily too much energy and time to keep on the course that is not right for me. If I have to stay in this course, I will definitely lose my motivation and passion for Math. I registered for this course because I was interested in Math, not to lose my passion and give up on it.
Also, MATH 110 is totally different from the Math that I want to learn. MATH 110 is too theoretical and I prefer learning practical skills. I also realized that I only need MATH 111 to take upper level Math courses. MATH 111 is enough to major in Mathematics or Statistics. MATH 110 was not required for most of the upper year courses and therefore it is not worth it.
I also had asthma for about a year. When I first came here, my doctor said my asthma was not treated that well because I used my inhaler two or three times a day. I got a prescription to get another inhaler. To get better, I see the doctor regularly about once every three months.
I'm planning to get a job as a quantitative analyst. Even though I'm majoring in Statistics, understanding the overall market economically is important to work in the finance industry. For that reason, I was planning to take ECON 111 in the winter term, but I found that I can take it this semester. I already have two Math courses that are recommended to students who are thinking about majoring in Statistics, so I'm exploring courses outside of Mathematics. Since my high school didn't have any economics classes, ECON 111 has been in my shopping cart for months. I haven't met many people outside of Mathematics majors, so I want to interact with people from other areas as well.
I realized that MATH110 is not required for upper year Math or Statistics courses. MATH 111 is required for many courses and it teaches appropriate material to understand higher classes. MATH 110 is too theoretical and impossible to understand. I need MATH 111 to take upper year Math courses such as MATH 228.
