Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Director of the Faculty of Arts and Science,

I am appealing to add SPAN 111 (Fall,2021). I am unable to attend this class in the winter term as it only available in the fall term. I had a mishap with professors telling me I should drop the class, then other professors telling me to stay in the class. I ended up dropping it for FREN 150 as the confusion was too much. I struggle with a mental illness that I do see a therapist for on a weekly basis, but in the recent weeks I have not been able to leave my bed much unless for classes that have mandatory attendance and my rugby practices. Therefore, I have not been able to keep track of most days and deadlines. The 19th of September after my exhibition game in Guelph I returned to Kingston with the team and had to head back to East Gwillimbury that same night to meet my family for a family emergency as there was an incident with my brother that had him unable to leave his bed for school Monday. As its just my brother, Father and I, my father had to go to work leaving me the only one able to watch him. The day of the 20th I had woken caring for my brother the whole day, as watching over my two-family dogs. When I returned to Kingston Wednesday the 22nd of September, I had failed to realize the deadline has passed to add a course. I emailed Dr. Margaret the 26th of September in hopes she could provide some guidance in returning to SPAN 111, as I this third week of university I was compiled with a huge work load and was failing to understand my philosophy class and in hopes I would be able to switch into class I could comprehend much better in as I am a French student and I know very minimal basics of Spanish.

As I do understand we are approaching a completion of 1/3 of the term, I do believe I will not fall behind, and will be able to catch up quickly and promptly. Languages have always been a strong suite, as well as I have a strong French base in reading, writing, and comprehension and my understanding of basic Spanish will help me understand the material a third of the way into the term.

For the future, I will have to plan accordingly as I did not do my research into the classes earlier in the summer. As well as, I did not take advantage in using the early access to shopping carts to my discretion. I will also ensure I will not allow myself to struggle so long before I make those decisions for mental and physical health to drop a course I can??t seem to understand. As I do plan to major in gender studies and minor in both French and Spanish, I find its important that I do get my mandatory courses such as SPAN 111 & 112 completed as early as possible that will allow to continue the pathway that I have outlined. As I have figured the pathway, I hope to follow for my next 4 years of study at queens, it will help me outline courses I need to take that I have a strong base of not only understanding but interest as well. I do hope you take my appeal into consideration as I am a strong student academically and even though I am apart of the Queen??s Women Rugby student, I strive to be the best student-athlete I can be.
