New Information: Here are the answer to your particular concerns that might be the reason to reject appealing to adding courses late
1. Why I got fail on three courses of Summer,2021, and ESLA 172?
I do not attend any classes since my parents suddenly ill heavily which has been explained on appeal. Also, I already receive the email from art and science appeal that the appeal to drop my failed summer term courses was approved, so the transcripts of Summer, 2021 would change to drop instead. So, the transcripts cannot connect with academic ability.
For fail of ESLA 172, it is the company course of English Program, my grandma was gone during that time, due to my grandpa also gone, a thing is a big event to my family. So I went back to my hometown to participate in the funeral. I thought it would not affect enrollment so I do not appeal for that, but seemingly it does influence your decision.
All in all, my current transcript is not enough to get to know my academic ability, because I even not take an academic course as a usual freshman, so why would you think I do not have good academic performance or I do not have enough ability to catch up?
2. Why not appeal before September, 20?
I never thought appeal would be so complex and waiting so long, and I thought appeal would be completed before September, 20.
3. How to explain the account has been locked by due fees?
The fee I owe is all from Summer, 2021, and I have been approved to drop courses without academic penalty, so the financial appeal would be highly possible approved. If once the senate block is removed for unpaid fees, and my account become activated again, there even have huge money on account, since the tuition I have paid before was not used.
4. This semester is already week 5 of term, it is late to catch up.
I do go to the lectures of the courses, and my academic ability allows me to handle the courses I choose, also, I could utilize office hours, teacher assistant, ASUS tutor, and writing center for help.
I believe the appeal is the way for students to solve their problems, rather than interfere, block, and disbelieve the choice of students. I definitely would be responsible for my decision, and I would try my best to catch up on the courses since late enrollment.
My parents were ill on May 19th, then recovered around August, now they are healthy so I do not have any worries.
Also, here is the reason I must to enroll in Fall, 2021
1. I already got support and a letter from the professor, I have communicated with them, and they saw my ambition.
2. DRAM100, PSYC100, and POLS110 are full-year courses, the next in-person courses are only offered next fall term, and GPHY102 only offer this fall term.
3. My major was undeclared because I want to try the course I had never taken before, to explore more subjects and possibilities, so the first 24 credits are extremely important. Although PSYC100 does exist during the Summer term, it does not have to communicate in person, and lab or tutorial. Also, the 3 credits courses I plan to take do not show on future schedules except fall, 2021.
4. I have gap for 2 semesters, and the reason I have been to Kingston is to take classes, and begin campus life, rather than waste my life.
5. I would be responsible for the result of my choice, how to catch up on the courses is the thing I need to worry about.

Appeal Letter
Appeal Letter: Dear Board of Studies,
I am sending a second level appeal to the Associate Dean's decision regarding my appeal to drop the following courses: PSYC100, CISC101 and WRIT125 (Summer 2021) after the academic deadline. My first appeal was denied; however, below, I included my answer to the specific reasons behind the Associate Dean's decision.
1. How my studies were impacted by my mother??s circumstances?
The Associate Dean's decision indicated that my submitted documentation does not provide related information. In this appeal, I included a personal statement written by my mother which describes the time that I had spent taking care of her after her accident on May 19th and the following three months of recovery. The letter also indicates why I had to spend so much time taking care of her and how my studies were impacted by her illness. Also, in the medical discharge summary after my mother's accident, the doctor indicated that she requires bed rest for at least one month. I have included this document in my first appeal.
I did not have time or energy to study as I had to take care of my mother throughout the day. She required assistance on various levels. Due to the specificity of her transverse fracture of lumbar spine, the only method of recovery is bed rest continually. After finishing her physical examination and being discharged from the hospital, my mother was unable to perform daily necessities. I had to prepare nutritional meals for her, help her eat and drink, clean her body, deal with urine and feces, meet and ask questions with doctors, and pick up her medication. After finishing one task, I had to do the next one immediately after. Therefore, I hardly had time to spare for my own studies. Starting from May 19th, this routine lasted three months. I had tried to study after finishing my tasks at the end of the day, but I did not have enough time to sleep and I was extremely tired from taking care of my mother. I do not believe anyone could stay focused and work efficiently under such circumstances. Taking care of my mother took up nearly all my time, energy, as well as mental and emotional capacity.
2. The discharge summary indicated that my mother??s illness occurred prior to the drop date, why did I not drop my courses before the deadline?
Firstly, the discharge summary shows the day of my mother's discharge from the hospital rather than represents the day of recovery. At that point, my mother was still severely injured and required my assistance at all times. The only way for a person with transverse fracture of lumbar spine to recover is to remain in bed for a long period of time. The discharge summary on the attached document that I included mentioned that my mother has not recovered yet and was discharged to continue her recovery at home.
Secondly, I did not have time and energy to manage my studies or find the time to drop my courses as I was extremely concerned for my mother's well-being. My days and nights included taking care of my mother on a full-time basis as well as applying for my study permit and visiting my 89-year-old grandfather. I did not have any time to spare for my classes and studies, unless I would have had to sacrifice my sleep.
Once my mother recovered, I came up with a plan to return to my studies and catch up on my courses. Throughout the recovery period, I contacted my professors and teaching assistants asking them for suggestions about catching up on course material even during those difficult times. Now that my extenuating circumstances are solved, I have been using my time to do some self-learning in preparation for courses I will take such as computer science and PSYC100. I am hoping to prepare myself so that I can easily adapt to the academic workload as a full-time student. I am currently not enrolled in any classes in this semester (Fall 2021), but I am attending writing center workshops and appointments to help me develop skills required to succeed in my courses. I am also frequently in contact with an academic advisor and career counsellor. I have also determined my major of choice in comparison to my undeclared major from three months ago. I am also attending regular EAL appoints at SASS to improve my reading, writing, and speaking skills. I also join conversation groups offered by QUIC to improve my spoken English.
My academic goals for 2022 include declaring my major and taking the necessary prerequisite courses during the Winter and Summer semesters. In the fall 2022 semester, I am hoping to have taken enough courses to progress in my degree so I can continue enrolling in core courses according to the degree plan. Once I have caught up in my academic program, I would like to join clubs related to my degree as well as explore different areas of interest. I would like to develop my skills both academically and socially so that I can effectively utilize the knowledge I learned in class and throughout my degree.
I hope I have addressed some of the concerns raised by the Associate dean's decision to deny my appeal. I strongly urge the Associate dean to reconsider my appeal as my mother's accident was unpredictable and I was put in an extenuating circumstance that was beyond my control. My inability to attend any of my classes and prepare for my exams and quizzes do not reflect my academic ability at all. The fail on my transcript would extremely misguide my actual academic performance and severely affect my GPA which will impact my future studies and career. Also, I believe that it is unfair to pay tuition for courses that I had not attended due to my unfortunate circumstances. I would like to apply for a financial appeal after obtaining an approval of my academic appeal.
