Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Stephenson,

I am submitting an appeal to add a course past the deadline. It has been a hectic semester for me to say the least, with medical school applications being due tomorrow. In the midst of things, I was misguided during the course selection period by familial matters (moving to Ottawa from Oshawa). As such, I overlooked the requirement for the Schulich School of Medicine of having 3 300-level courses or higher in a semester. I am currently enrolled in ENIN 140, CLST 204, IDIS 280, REPD 473, and LISC 594, thus missing the requirement by one course. I did not notice this until after the deadline to add/drop courses had passed.

So, I reached out to Katherine Rudder from the Life Sciences and Biochemistry Program Office and she suggested I make an appeal. I would like to enroll in BCHM 370-700, Genetics and Genomics. I have contacted Dr. Laura van Staalduinen, the instructor, for her support in enrolling and she noted that I have the prerequisites needed and thus her support.

I am hard-working, highly motivated, and would be very grateful for the chance to rectify my mistake by taking this course. I am confident in my ability to succeed in the course as well.

Academic Plan

Academic Plan: I will dedicate my reading week as well as several weekends to catching up on course content and assignments. I will set up a timetable of 3 3-hour blocks (morning, afternoon, evening) to have dedicated time to work on the course and streamline my focus. I will also drop a course to allocate more time to get up to speed. Throughout, I will not neglect my mental health or wellbeing by continuing to attend intramural sports in the late evenings as well as slotting in time for rest/leisure. During weekdays, I will continue with my other courses as before, with the timeslot for the dropped course allocated to BCHM 370. Thus, my academic performance will not be affected.

Should my appeal be accepted, I will immediately contact Dr. van Staalduinen to establish a timeline for the content and assignments I need to do, as well as get connected to my group for part 2 of a group assignment.
