Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean Dr. Jill Atkinson,
My name is Ashley Schachter, and I am a third year Bachelor of Arts Honours student majoring in Psychology. I am appealing to take third year courses away on a letter of permission through another university for the winter 2022 semester.
Last year, I applied through Queen's exchange program to attend a host university in Australia for the Winter 2022 semester. I was waitlisted and none of the alternative placement schools felt like the right fit for me. Shortly after, I began researching independent study abroad programs. I want to spend a semester abroad because, as someone who enjoys learning and trying new things, I feel this is the perfect opportunity to achieve academic and personal growth. I recognize that this experience will undoubtedly pose new challenges. On the other hand, for as long as I can remember, my greatest passion has always been traveling to new places. This opportunity will allow me to leave my comfort zone, persevere in the face of unique challenges, and simultaneously improve on both an individual and academic level.
After much research and carefully considering my options, I finally met with the study abroad coordinator, Mary Marshall. With her help, I found that the American University of Paris would be my best option. The schools offer courses that align with my degree plan; therefore, I would be able to meet my outstanding degree requirements and graduate on time come fourth year. I am confident in my ability to accomplish these goals.
My Undergraduate Chair, Dr. Meghan Norris, supports my request to take upper year courses required for my degree at the American University of Paris in Paris, France.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this appeal.
Sincerely,
Ashley Schachter (20188513)

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: Should this appeal be granted, I am confident that I will be able to continue to achieve academic success. I am currently on track in my degree plan as I have currently taken 87 credits worth of courses out of 120 credits. The taken credits include 18 transfer credits from cegep and 39 credits from courses required for my BAH in psychology. Therefore, I only have 33 credits left to be taken over my last 3 semesters of my undergraduate degree.
Of those 33 credits, 21 of them must meet the requirements of my psychology (arts) major plan. I am hoping to take the thesis option so, I know that at least 9 credits will be earned toward my psychology degree while I complete my thesis. I am hoping to take 6 of those remaining credits during fourth year and the other 6 remaining credits during my semester abroad if I am granted permission to pursue that option.
When I met with Mary Marshall, the study abroad coordinator, she confirmed I can meet my degree requirements should I attend the American University of Paris (AUP). I plan to have any course I take there be approved by Queen's (including electives).
The courses I hope to take at AUP to satisfy my psychology requirements are:
- Psycholinguistics (PY3055) which would meet my PSYC_Cognitive requirement
- Psychology of Sensation (PY3025) which would meet my PSYC_Developmental requirement
The elective courses I am interested in at AUP are:
- The History of Paris (HI3004) which is offered by AUP's history department
- Communicating fashion (GS3004) which is offered by AUP's gender studies department
- Paris Fashion History and Geographies (CM4201) which is offered by AUP's communication department
I am aware that Queen's does not have a communications department; therefore, should that course not be approved for my studies, I would take a second course from the gender studies department (Art, Culture, & Gender in Italian Renaissance (GS3014)).
