Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

I am contacting you to submit an appeal request since I was not able to complete the course of SOCY 300 last Winter.
I have finished all the assignments of that course except the final assignment. I received high grades in the finished assignments (2 B grades and 1 A-) which accounted for 60% of the course workload. At the time of the final assignment, I had an overwhelming situation including feeling depressed which was discussed with my family physician. In addition, one of my kids was sick and my husband was doing his Royal College Surgery exam. Of note, I don't have any family members with me in Canada to help and support.

I contacted the professor and he gave me two extensions and the second one was supported by a letter from the wellness centre. Unfortunately, during that extension time, my grandmother passed away after having COVID-19. The circumstances were very difficult and my family needed my support back home. I had to travel there with my kids and I emailed the professor to clarify my situation. When it became clear that it was impossible for me to do the assignment especially with the Summer term start, I asked him to consider a re-weight option of the previous assignments. He replied saying I will take a look at the work you have done so far and get back to you. All the emails are attached with this appeal request.

I contacted him multiple times after that to solve this issue and he told me in his last email as attached I know it is important but there is no need to keep messaging me after I have said I will look at it..... It will be done, don't worry. I was not told that I need to apply for an appeal or ask for a waive of the deadline of an incomplete grade until I figured that recently when I spoke with an academic advisor which was already after the deadline of Sep 15th.

I was not aware of the need to apply for an appeal since I was waiting for the professor to find a solution and contact me as he stated in the last email but I did not hear from him. Due to that, I am applying for this looking for an Aegrotat appeal after that since this is something that is completely out of my control as explained above.

I have my grandmother's death certificate but it is written in Turkish. However, I can have it formally translated to English if needed.
