Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I understand that this appeal is long overdue and this is because I truly put a lot of my pressure on myself it has been one hectic year full of many ups and downs and I thankyou for your time in reading this considering the circumstances. I am appealing to extend my IN grades in POLS 419, DEVS 221 and POLS 431 Winter 2021. While I have been in communication with one of my professors I have neglected to communicate with my other professors due to reasons related to my disability
These extenuating circumstances encompass a variety of different reasons that extended from the winter 2021 semester and have resulted from a culmination of different events during my last four years here at Queens .
Last semester specifically I was undergoing treatment for my physical and mental health. The chronic stress and anxiety and other environmental factors from the last four years began to take a physical toll on my body and made me quite sick in various different ways from hormone imbalances, androgenic alopecia, gut problems and severe mental health along other mystery illnesses related to higher-than-normal levels or cortisol and DHT. My primary focus was to get healthy that I am currently in the process of figuring it all out alongside lisenced medical professionals as I am doing extensive intake forms and testing. The beginning of this process started January 2021. I was actively getting treatment at the Upper room clinic and was communicating with student wellness along with QSAS about my ongoing situation as treatment encompassing PRP therapy, vitamin C infusions etc requires a couple days of rejuvenation. I am someone who already suffers with ADHD and anxiety and the extremely poor mental health state that I was in last semester really impacted my schoolwork as the conditions of COVID made doing schoolwork for someone with ADHD that much more difficult.
The reason I am asking to extend the IN from the summer term is as a result of the ongoing situation which unfortunately was not alleviated. I was still experiencing treatment, as well as the other predisposed conditions. This includes a physical accident (two torn ligaments in ankle) and other personal circumstances. I was focused on taking each day at a time as the basic functions of living became extremely difficult for me. While I was not neglecting school work as I was still doing manageable amounts for me working on assignments when I was in the right headspace it became difficult with other competing commitments and personal traumatic life. I became fearful to reach out to professors asking for extra time as I felt guilty and ashamed for not being well enough to complete the designated assignments, resulting in a vicious cycle and scared to his reach out to the professors as I felt shame about not being able to complete it for their deadlines. It is for this reason I was unable to complete my school work as this had become a secondary priority put on the back burner until I was able to function again doing simple day to day tasks.
While this is an ongoing issue I strongly believe that I am on the right track to alleviate these issues, I am currently in touch with my QSAS advisor and learning strategist to make a plan to catch up on my overdue assignments from last term. With having ADHD having structure and routine is super important to my success furthermore having in person classes and the library open to separate my personal and academic life has done wonders for my progress this semester. I have taken up things to make me happy and alleviate any negative thoughts and energy around me such as meditation and yoga and finally I am going to therapy and now have someone to talk to someone to talk to allocating time to deal with how I am feeling and how to move forward. I appreciate your empathy and accommodation. Here is further information on my plan.
