Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Queens University Arts & Sciences,
My name is Lucas Schaffer-Wood and I am in my second/third year of study. I am appealing a grade from my first year at Queens University, where I was unable to submit assignments due to medical issues. In March of 2020, I was hospitalized, and diagnosed with schizophrenia. During this time, I was unable to focus on schoolwork, meet deadlines, or study at all due to the fact that I was experiencing psychosis. For the next few months, up to a year after March 2020, I was mentally unstable and was in no position to take any sort of academic action. For this reason, I was unable to submit the final assignment for my Gender Studies course, GNDS125. The final assignment was a group project, and I was incapable of being in a state that permitted me to work on this assignment, or collaborate with my group. Due to my psychosis, I am appealing the D- that I received in this course, as I believe that had my medical mental health been fine, I would have submitted the final assignments, and received a better grade in the course. Throughout the last two years since March 2020 I have been receiving treatment at the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health in Toronto. I have been under the care of a team of psychiatrists, nurses and specialists, who are helping me recover, through medication and treatment. I ask that you consider my appeal, and attempt to understand the circumstances I was in that did not permit me to finish my school year, or be aware enough to submit an appeal within the usual time. If necessary, I can supply documentation regarding the time of my hospitalizations, and a letter from my medical team outlining the circumstances.
Thank you for your consideration.
