Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: My name is Parker Jones and I??m currently in my 2nd year at Queens University. I??m writing this note to request that my Stat 263 current mark of a ??D? be changed to a ??CR?. I??m reaching out now as I didn??t know of this option until very recently.
I took Statistics in my first Queen??s term, Fall 2020. I did well on all assignments and quizzes (90%); but not well on the mid-term and the final resulting in a ??D? for the class. I have ADHD and an accommodation for extra test time; however, the accommodation was not in place first semester (see attached assessment and high school IPP). I also decided to take the final when it was made available to students which was at 1:00 a.m. Calgary time. This late start was a mistake on my part, but I was already anxious and wanted to get this final and the semester behind me.
As you know, school was different this past year due to Covid restrictions and it was extremely hard and isolating since it was my first year. With orientation and all classes being remote, forming study groups/networks was challenging. Additionally, I did not have an advisor and was doing my best just to keep up with my classes and learn how to work remotely. I now understand that due to Covid, I could have opted for a passing mark and I also understand that an e-mail communication was sent to all students; however, I honestly did not see that e-mail communication and with the isolation mentioned above, I did not learn of this option by other means. I reached out immediately when I learned of this option and was told that the deadline was passed. I then learned of the appeals process which is why you are receiving this letter.
It is important for me to explain the reason I??m requesting the ??CR?. I??m currently majoring in Computer Science; however, after careful thought and many conversations, I would like to change to Commerce as I think it is a better fit for me. As the Queens Commerce program is very difficult to get accepted to, I??m also looking at other universities. I have already received the permission to retake Stat 263 in Winter 2022 and am now signed up for the class as it is a prerequisite for just about any Commerce program. I am very concerned when I talk with other universities an I??m told that even with retaking Stat 263, the current ??D? could keep me from getting accepted as it will still be in my transcript. Most Universities I??ve contacted count the prior grade even if Queens does not calculate it into the GPA after a re-take.
I would greatly appreciate consideration on my request. As a second year student, I??m now well aware of what I need to do differently, how to better stay on top of my school responsibilities, and how to better stay ahead of my anxieties. I??ve been in counseling and am trying hard to plan my future while feeling good about myself. My performance in other Queens classes is much stronger and the Stats grade is the issue that I hope to fix as I try to pursue a Commerce degree.
