Dear Dr. Atkinson,
I am appealing to drop the course PHYS 118 (Fall 2021/Winter 2022).
The first few weeks of school I was sick and this affected my attendance of lectures and tutorials for all my courses. I had originally thought I had COVID. I had submitted an appeal for another course, BIOL 102 during this time.
After those weeks, I needed to catch up on my work missed from the courses. PHYS 118 is a demanding course that requires a lot of time and practice to fully understand the concepts. I found that I was unable to devote time to the course after I got better. I performed poorly on the mid-term and even with my efforts to do better I am still behind.
I did not drop the course before Week 8 because I thought that it would affect my Work Study and Bursary. I thought I would no longer be considered a full time student and it would be rescinded. This would put more pressure on my family and I to cover the cost of my education. Between worrying about my performance in the course and the possibility of my work study permission being rescinded my mental health was affected. I spoke to an advisor and I made the decision to drop the course as I will still be considered full-time with an 80% course load. I realized that in order for me to succeed as a student, it will be better to drop this course and focus on my remaining courses to help get into my chosen major. I have decided that if the appeal is granted I will take the course again in the Spring/Summer. Thank you so much for your consideration.
