Dear Dr. Atkinson,

I hope that you and your loved ones are doing well during these unprecedented times. I would like to begin by expressing my sincerest gratitude for taking the time to read my appeal letter and consider my request. I am appealing to drop POLS 230 (Fall, 2021). This semester has been very difficult for me as I have been experiencing serious psychological challenges that have significantly impacted my academic performance. My ability to focus and perform at my best has been directly and severely impacted due to serious mental health challenges that I have been facing. I have been suffering daily with intrusive thoughts that have disrupted my ability to concentrate and have adversely affected my academic performance by prohibiting me from actively engaging in my studies. Although these challenges have been persistent, I had been managing and things were somewhat under control. However, my situation took a turn for the worse in mid-October. I hope you understand that I do not feel comfortable sharing any details due to the personal nature of my situation. However, I am very grateful that Queen's has resources such as counselling services offered through Student Wellness Services which have been very helpful to me. I am also beyond grateful that my Professors and Teaching Assistants have been so gracious and accommodating.

Although I am facing challenges that severely impact my studies and my concentration, I am still committed to excelling. I am humbly asking that you consider my request to drop POLS 230. I am making this decision as I believe focusing on four courses rather than five will be much more manageable for me at this time. The reason why I did not drop this course earlier was due to the fact that I thought I could handle everything, but I cannot. I honestly believe that a lighter course load will prove to be beneficial for my health.

My plan for achieving academic success should my appeal be granted is to continue with counselling, register with Queen's Student Accessibility Services (QSAS), and take a summer course to make up for the one I am dropping now.

I thank you in advance for considering my request. Your time is much appreciated. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me by email at 18nvw1@queensu.ca or by phone at 647-270-1340.

Sincerely,

Natally Widdis
