Petition Letter: To: Associate Dean (Academic)
I am appealing to drop Gender Studies, GNDS 120 (Fall 2021).
I am a first year student at Queen??s. This is my first experience being away at school. Although I am very achievement-oriented and generally a good student, I??ve become overwhelmed with course work and stress over the past few weeks. For Gender Studies, in particular, I have fallen behind to the point where this has caused my stress to increase to an unmanageable level.
My family has also had some significant challenges recently, including the sudden passing of my father. The beginning of this school year marked 2 years from this event, which I am still dealing with.
I did not drop the course earlier as I thought I would be able to manage the course work and catch up on overdue work, but this is not possible at this point. Also, the stress associated with the Gender Studies course will be detrimental to my ability to focus on my other courses, which will compound the problem.
As soon as I realized this was a problem I reached out to my mother, Julie Eisenstat. We discussed this issue the morning of November 3, 2021. She agreed that the best solution for me right now is to drop the course. Unfortunately, I learned that the deadline for academic withdrawal from a course was November 1, 2021, so this deadline was missed. I immediately called Arts and Science Student Services and spoke with an advisor, who suggested I submit an appeal request. My mother also spoke with an advisor, who scheduled an appointment for us to meet directly with an Academic Advisor, Spring Forsberg, for additional advice. The earliest available appointment was November 10, 2021.
I also reached out to the Queen??s Wellness Centre and scheduled an appointment with a counsellor for November 10, 2021. The counsellor will submit a Letter of Support directly, if they have not already done so.
In order to ensure future academic success I plan to enroll in a course during the upcoming summer semester, although likely not Gender Studies. I will do my best to manage my stress and workload, reaching out for support and counselling whenever necessary. I think this will become easier as I adjust to university life as well. I will also monitor course drop dates to ensure I do not miss a deadline in future terms.
Thank you for your consideration.
