I am appealing to withdraw from a Queen??s course that I am currently enrolled in, WRIT240 (Fall, 2021).
A little background of myself, I am a mature student with a family (i.e. husband and 3 children (16, 12 & 8)) and working a full-time job as a Senior Manager at a large pharmaceutical company in Toronto. In 2018, I decided to return to school in order to complete a degree in Life Sciences. Over the past 3 years, I have taken 1 to 2 courses each term in order to complete my degree. Currently, I have completed 12 half-courses in order to complete my degree.
The following is an explanation of extenuating circumstances I have been facing this past year that I would like you to consider in order to withdraw from WRIT240. For the past 3 years, my husband has been on dialysis. In his first 2 years, he did really well on dialysis but at end of Dec 2020, he experienced a very serious infection in his peritoneum. During a routine surgery to correct the issue, he ended up in the ICU on a ventilator by mid-Jan 2021. From Jan 2021 to July 2021, he was in and out of the hospital for 1 to 2 weeks at a time in order to deal with the infection he had in his peritoneum. Also, in January 2021 he was switched from peritoneal dialysis to hemodialysis. Finally, in August he began to feel better, and we decided for our family it would be best if we could do the hemodialysis at home. My husband and I trained at the hospital for 5-6 hours a day from Aug 9th to Oct 1st, 2021, and set up our home for his treatment. I was really hoping this switch would allow me to get back on track with being able to take 2 courses per term.
I am currently enrolled in PHYG215 and WRIT240. Over this past year, I have tried to take PHYG215 twice and had to drop it as I was unable to keep up with the coursework due to my husband not being so well. I thought I would be able to handle my current Job work, my husband's dialysis at home, and 2 courses this semester but I have realized that was not possible for me to keep up. To top it all off on Oct 30th I was hospitalized for a few days as I had begun to experience some health issues and am still undergoing some tests to determine how to deal with my own health issues.
In summary, I know that my situation consists of ongoing health issues that I am dealing with for my husband and now possible for myself. Regarding my husband, based on what my family has dealt with at the beginning of the year to now, we have come a long way. Having my husband do his dialysis in the comfort of our home and allowing my children to also help out has been a positive move. Having the transition overlap into the beginning of the school year did put me behind in my assignments in the WRIT240 course. Also, I am hoping my own health issue is resolved by the end of the year. I am hopeful that these extenuating circumstances will be managed better and allow me to continue my studies at Queens University into 2022.
On Nov 1st late in the evening, I realized that I had to make the decision to drop one of my courses and decided that it would be best for me to drop the WRIT240 course. I tried to drop it at about 11:45 pm but experienced some difficulty. I would like to appeal to have this course dropped late and have it not appear on my transcript. Also, based on my extenuating circumstances I am hoping to get back the fees for this course in order to take it again in the future.
