Letter for academic appeal
I am appealing the faculty's decision to drop ANAT 215 (Fall, 2021).
I am making this appeal since this semester was hard on my mental health due to the following reasons. During the summer before fall semester 2021, I was going under therapy since I didn't know how to adapt to the new in person study environment and was feeling anxious and extremely stressed out. I worked straight for two years along with school to support my study in Canada, but this semester I chose not to work due to busy schedule and volunteering. Therefore, my therapy didn't last very long (July 2021 to October 2021) due to financial problems caused by my grandma diagnosed with breast cancer and my parents found it hard to support my rent let alone therapy. I am an international student, and because of covid I haven't been home for 3 years, which already had an impact on my mental health. But after hearing the news about my grandma around October 2021, all I wanted was to go home and be there for her, but China requests a 1-month quarantine, and I couldn't go home cause financially my parents were trying their best to support my grandma so we couldn't afford the plane ticket and academically I have in person classes and labs so I couldn't afford the time to go home to visit. Every time after I facetime my grandma, my mental health declines since her conditions are not improving due to her age. I wasn't there when my grandpa passed away, and I can't visit home that easily and that often like a lot of my friends, so when reading week came along, and everyone was home celebrating thanksgiving, I cried in my room for a week, and after that it was harder to keep up in this course. This circumstance affects my anat course the most since I am a Biochem major, and all my other courses with heavy workloads are biochemistry related, which I can do well in since I am familiar with the material. But this course I wasn't familiar in, and learning about the human body or going into labs to see the cadavers made me think about my grandma, which stopped my from going to protect my mental health, although from time to time, it still haunts me. I didn't drop the course before November 1st 2021 because I didn't want my parents to worry about me as well, so I wanted to try hard and do well in it. I now understand how it was unresponsible for me to choose not to drop it and it caused the faculty extra problems by choosing this way, but at the moment I thought it was a responsible choice to protect my family.
To make sure this will not happen again, I am going to choose wisely for my courses second semester and stick to my familiar fields for the second semester study which I believe I can manage. I will also take a gap year after the second semester to be with my family and recollect my mental health.

To whom this matter concerns,
Ms. Wang has been seen virtually in my office, thus far on two separate occasions, and is currently in ongoing therapy for treatment of symptoms related to an acute traumatic experience she had while attending an Anatomy class at her college. I have given her a provisional diagnosis of Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, ICD-10, F43.11 (Acute).
The situation which produced this traumatic experience was described to me as follows: Ms. Wang was attending a lab which included a human cadaver. Upon seeing the corpse, she became physically nauseated and emotionally charged, as the deceased reminded her of her grandfather who had recently passed. She was able to describe specific details of the body that, while being that of a Caucasian male, still reminded her of her grandfather of Chinese descent, because of the state of decomposition. This encounter was what caused the trauma to occur.
Following her encounter with the deceased, she describes a progressively worsening mental state, as she could not get the body out of her mind, and experienced frequent, ??intrusive thoughts? of death, coupled with negative, sensate experiences of unpleasant smell and visualization. The situation is further complicated by Ms. Wang??s long absence from seeing her family in Beijing, the fact that she could not be at her grandfather??s funeral, and the continual stress of previous travel restrictions during COVID, which she has described as overwhelming and debilitating.
In my professional, clinical opinion, I believe these symptoms are real and not exaggerated in this patient. Ms. Wang has been given a referral to an EMDR specialist and for a psychiatric consult to discuss potential medication for her anxiety. Her treatment is ongoing. Therefore, I am recommending leniency regarding Ms. Wang being allowed to drop the course which generated these feelings, as she has further stated that she will never be able to take such a course again and may need to change the focus of her future studies.
