Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Dr. Jill Atkinson,

I am writing to you in hopes of dropping one of my fall term courses. I am appealing to drop ENGL 237 (Fall 2021).
While I do wish that I was able to see this course through, it has become extremely detrimental to my mental health and has prevented me from focusing on my other courses. I truly feel that I would be able to focus and dedicate more time to my other, and more important, courses if I were able to drop ENGL 237. I have spoken with my therapist and we have come to the decision that it would be the best decision for myself if I were to drop the course. I truly thought that I would be able to do it and make it work and that is why I did not drop it before the academic deadline. Now I realize that I truly will not be able to make it work and still be able to prioritize my well-being. I am a hard working student and I pride myself in seeing things through till the end but I have learned that sometimes I need to be strong enough to realize that it is okay to admit that you cannot do it. I was feeling good about my courses early in the semester but as I continued, my anxiety has just become too much and I feel that my studies have taken the biggest hit. I will continue to work with my therapist to develop strategies to help get my academic anxiety under control and manageable. The jump from fully online to fully in-person was extremely difficult to navigate and is something that I continue to struggle with. I know that I will be able to overcome these issues but as of right now, I am struggling. The reason I only need to drop one course is because I do not feel as much pressure or stress from my other 4 courses. This course specifically has caused me an immense amount of stress and anxiety to the point where I feel like I cannot even look at my OnQ without breaking down. As I mentioned above, the reason I did not drop this course before November 1st was because I was determined to try and make it work. But again, after many long talks with my therapist, we decided that it was better to drop the course than have myself feeling sick over it everyday. I do apologize if this letter goes into too much detail about my situation but I do not mind talking about my mental health struggles. It is something that I have become comfortable sharing with other people

Thank you very much for your time.
