Petition Letter
Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean
I am appealing to drop POLS 280 and HLTH 101 (Fall 2021) due to unforeseen circumstances.
I registered with QSAS (Queen??s Student Accessibility Services) at the start of the term and had accommodations in place. This was my first time having registered disabilities and having access to accommodations. I had been struggling the year prior with online learning but was hopeful to do better in person. However, two of my classes were online this semester but was using the accommodations and technology available to me to try my best.
Early in the semester I had been in contact with Katie Bala, an Occupational Therapist at
Queens, to keep myself on track. Additionally, I had reached out to Dr. Muroe at Queens Health Services to create a treatment plan to address my learning disabilities. I was struggling with my classes but I was still on top of them. A new medication was introduced as part of the treatment plan that led to an unexpected reaction. I reached out for support again, this time I was put in contact with mental health services. We stopped medication and reevaluated our plan.
I had gone to the walk-in clinic on campus and was told I had a viral infection that would go away in a few weeks. It did not I was sick for over a month and was tested for Mono. The physical illness on top of the medication and a personal crisis all at once were things I could not have prevented or foreseen. They all happened around the drop date. I had every intention of completing the semester however these extenuating circumstances made it extremely difficult to do so.
I am continuing to work with the team at Health Services and QSAS to ensure I am set up to succeed. I am currently talking with the Occupational Therapist, PTSD therapist, trying a new medication and only going to be taking two classes. Additionally, after meeting with an academic advisor I am aware of academic considerations, short and long term, to prevent having to drop the classes completely which I do not want to do in the future.
Thank you for your time and consideration in this matter.
Sincerely,
Naomi Curro
