Petition Letter
Petition Letter: My name is Sarah Currie and I am a fourth year Gender Studies major. I am appealing to get all of my failed grades (CLST 103; ENIN 140, 240, 340; GNDS 311, 340, 380; RELS 237; WRIT 250, 290) removed from my academic record. I have recently been diagnosed with ADD and different learning disabilities that have affected my academic performance throughout my time at Queen's.
In May 2021, I was academically dismissed and was asked to take a year off. During this time, my family and I contacted Dr. Jill Atkinson who instructed us as to how to proceed. After consideration, I was allowed to take the first semester off and return January 2022 as a part-time student. In September 2021, I was assessed and then diagnosed with ADD and a Verbal-Based Learning Disability. Prior to this, I had no knowledge or idea that I had these learning disabilities. During my school years, I always felt I worked twice as hard as my other classmates to focus, read and understand a simple piece of writing and then when Covid-19 hit - school felt impossible. Because my brain works differently I did not know that the 2020/21 school year was going to be the most difficult one yet. Transferring five courses to online, independent learning was a challenge that I could not meet. I found myself frustrated, confused, isolated and struggling daily and it ultimately lead to failure that was really out of my control.
ADD has affected my daily life and my academics so much as I was completely blinded by it. Looking back, it all makes sense why I was never a star student and moving forward, I am excited to work hard hoping to be successful in my studies. I hope that you will consider removing my failed courses from my academic record.
Thank you for your understanding and consideration.

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: This fall, I have been in contact with multiple advisors from Queen's who have all helped me create a plan for my return, beginning with a lighter course load. In addition, I have received academic accommodations suited to my learning style and disabilities. In the past, I have always had a full course load, making school very overwhelming. In my last year of high school, I was taking the same amount of classes as a part-time student and was significantly more successful than when I was enrolled in a full course load. These breaks throughout the day allowed me to focus better in all my courses. I believe switching to becoming a part-time student, with my accommodations, is the best option for me.
Again, thank you for your understanding and consideration.
