Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Hello,

I am writing this appeal to drop my class, HIST 242. The main reason for this is a confidential extenuating circumstance outlined in my supporting document. To give you a general idea of what my situation is, I have had poor mental health over my years at Queens and around a month ago I started having somewhat of a mental breakdown due to events personal to me and unrelated to academic stress. These mental health issues made me unfocused and, on some days, physically exhausted to the point where it felt impossible to do work or attend classes.

This obviously affected my academic performance. Specific to History 242, I missed a research paper worth 30 percent of my mark and I had already performed very poorly earlier in the year due to the mental health issues I detailed earlier. As a result, I am failing the course. The reason why I missed the deadline to drop is because my extenuating circumstances' main event occurred after the deadline to drop my classes; I did not know I would need to drop this course until after the drop deadline.

To deal with this extenuating circumstance, I discussed with my ConEd academic advisor, my Student Wellness counsellor, and did some drop in meetings with ArtSci academic advisors. This is how I got my supporting documentation, and after discussing with them about academic appeals I have come to the conclusion that it is appropriate for me to appeal to drop this course. This is because there exists a clear circumstance out of my control that hindered my ability to drop the course before the published deadline. Additionally, because I am currently failing the course, I can not apply for a credit-standing or an aegrotat appeal.

While I would prefer not to, I am able to share more about my situation upon request if it helps with the appeal. Please let me know if there is anything else you would like me to explain/provide, or if you simply would like me to share more if the contents of this letter is insufficient. Thank you very much.

Best regards,
Chris Gong
