Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Deans,

I am writing to you today to request an appeal for an aggregate mark for my class: KNPE 354. After discussion with my prof, Dr Patrick Costigan about my extenuating circumstances during this course he suggested I apply for an aggregate mark. This course has consisted of 6 assignments and one final exam presentation worth 20%. In the final week of school, both the final exam presentation and assignment 6 were due. Given my extenuating circumstances, Dr Costigan suggested I continue to complete Assignment 6 with an extension given by my QSAS Accommodation and get an aggregate mark for the final exam presentation as I already have 65% of my mark. However, due to my current illness, I am writing to see if it is possible to get an aggregate mark for the final 35% of my mark; the final exam and assignment 6 if possible.
My sequence of extenuating circumstances were well out of my control. First, it began on November 7th, when I received a very bad sickness with uncontrollable coughing. I was unable to sleep as I could not stop coughing and I could not attend class nor focus on any sort of school work. This sickness lasted for 2 weeks. When I started to recover I travelled home for a break the weekend of November 20th. Unfortunately, that weekend I was in a car accident and was admitted to the hospital by the police officers to Emergency for psychological trauma on November 21st. When I returned to school the week of the 22nd, I was again unable to attend class or do school work at home due to physical and mental trauma from the past weekend. The following week I was finally able to physically attend class for the first time and discuss this situation with Dr. Costigan.
Furthermore, although these are no in person exams, with the recent student outbreak of Covid 19, the mental stress of exams has impacted both my physiological and psychological health. Forced to write an in person exam yesterday, while half the class including my housemates applied for academic considerations due to close contact has provided more stress during exams that has taken away from my ability to comfortably study, be on campus and complete these assignments.
Given this series of extenuating circumstances, I missed 3 weeks of content from all 5 of my courses and was thrown into finals week very behind. With 4 final projects and 2 final exams I was and still am very overwhelmed.
In addition, I am currently feeling very unwell and predict I have caught a stomach illness. Although likely not Covid related, I am looking to get a test as soon as possible. This has severely impacted my ability to do any school work this week and is why I am requesting an aggregate mark for not only the final exam but the 6th assignment as well.
Therefore, I would like to request an aggregate mark for the last 35% final exam and 6th assignment for KNPE 354.
