Petition Letter: Appealing to drop CISC 221 (Winter,2015)

Dear Dr. Johanne Bénard,

I am writing this letter to ask for appealing to drop the course CISC 221 Computer Architecture, held within the winter semester of the 2015 academic year, even though the February 27th 2015 deadline has passed.

Due to very special circumstances, I have been unable to drop this class on time. Professor Dave Dove handed back the second quiz and the project after the deadline. It was then that I was notified of the fact that I had failed both. I did not have enough information to fully access my standing in this course before that.

I have, for a long time, had a serious mental health condition that has required many prescription medications. I have been taking sertraline for three years, and considering my condition was slightly better at the start of this term, I started to take it intermittently, which was later proved a mistake. The sertraline side effects include drowsiness, dizziness, tired feeling; mild nausea, changes in appetite and insomnia. My situation got severely worse after I changed my dose without consultation. I have been unable to sleep properly for the past 2 months, thus I did not do well in my first two quizzes because I can't focus and constantly have the urge to cry. I can't be closely in touch with my team members because of my irregular sleep patterns so I failed the project. I have seen a doctor today and he told me that taking sertraline irregular would only deteriorate my depression and anxiety. I'm now taking the pills strictly under instructions. The doctor said hopefully I will feel better in 3 weeks, so I believe I will do good in my exams but CISC 221 does not have a final exam and I have already lost more than 40 marks in this course so there's no way I can pass it. Professor Dove also suggested me to seek for help from an academic advisor.

I had to switch to a general program in my second year due to low marks in first year. I have been working hard to retake the courses I need for the program and boost my marks ever since that. Now I finally have the cumulative GPA enough to get me back to the honors program, but failing CISC 221 will make this impossible and I will have to take an extra year to get into the program but my financial situation will not allow that. It is because of circumstances that were out of my control that I can't do well in this course. I am a third year student and cannot afford to get a failure on my transcript, for I got an offer of a lab job at Alberta University. A failure would cause my offer to be declined. I plan to take a summer course at Athabasca University to replace the one I am hoping you will let me drop. If I was allowed to drop CISC 221, I will have more time to prepare for my other 4 exams and hopefully I will get into the honors program in this May and take an equivalent course of CISC 221 in this summer. I will also take lighter course load next year.

Sincerely,
Student 10061146 (12st3)
