Petition Letter: Appeal re: late drop for DEVS 220
Dear Associate Dean,
This semester I started with five courses, but dropped one by the deadline as I could immediately tell that I was not going to be able to handle the workload. Since then I have been enrolled in four courses, three of which I have been able to keep up with but I have been struggling with the fourth. I have been dealing with a newly diagnosed mental health problem and that has been the root of my struggles. In August I did an intake appointment at Student Wellness Services, and in September I first started working with a doctor there and began new medication to help deal with the problem. It took some time for me to get used to the new medication which led to not completing the first assignment in the course. Later in the semester we upped my dosage and it again took some time to adjust. During this time I again did not complete course work. Those assignments were part of a project that builds upon itself. Having not completed the majority of the project earlier in the term, recently when I tried to do the final part I found that I couldn??t because I didn??t have any of the previous work done.
In addition, while all of this was happening I was also being assessed at RARC for my learning disability and I did not receive the complete assessment until late in the semester, so I have not yet had an opportunity to work with Student Accessibility Services to update my accommodations.
I am requesting a late drop for DEVS 220. While my condition is improving and I am planning to work with an additional mental health provider now that my exams and term papers are complete, I have not had the capacity to catch up on that course and continue to be successful in the other three courses, which I really wanted to be able to complete well.
