Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,

I am appealing to drop BIOL 110 (Fall 2021), and PSYC 100 (Fall 2021) without penalty.

On November 5th, 2021, only a couple days after the deadline to drop courses, I suffered a concussion. This was my second bigger concussion, the last one was in 2018. Some of my symptoms were ; dizziness, lack of concentration, headaches, and pressure. My plan was not to drop these such courses, instead request time off. As a new student, I did not know about the form to request time off therefore, I had emailed my professors on November 7th, 2021, requesting such time off. Professor Birt kindly let me know I had to apply for academic consideration, which I had only seen on November 16th, 2021. That same day, I applied for such, demanding from the 5th to the 25th off, giving me some time to recover. On November 23rd, 2021, my request had been accepted but only valid from November 10th, to the 17th. I had not been on any devices the whole time and once I saw this, it caused me a lot of distress. I had gotten multiple bad grades, and was only weeks away from exams, to which I felt unready for as I missed a key part of the course. On November 26th, shambled in tears, on the phone with my therapist, I emailed my professors and multiple faculty, such as the academic consideration, explaining the issue and had been given advice. On December 7th, I met up with my therapist. He realized that I may not have been ready to go back into sports or academics right away as I was still having symptoms. Since then, I had not been able to complete both these courses, due to mental health and my concussion, and have been waiting for letters to be written by both the professional that had seen me through my concussion and my psychologist. I have now been fully cleared from my concussion and am planning on attending two or three courses to continue my studies part-time. I am in the process of applying to universities in the United States to continue my athletic career. Having these courses on my transcript may complicate my chances of attending these schools.

Thank you,
