Petition Letter
Petition Letter: My name is Kaile Thinghuus and I am currently in my 5th year towards completing my degree.
This appeal is a request to late drop the courses which I have failed this past fall semester as well as a request to defer for a semester.
In my second year, I began experiencing symptoms that impaired my academic success. In October of 2020, I was hospitalized and diagnosed with a mood disorder. Since then, I have been trying, decreasing, and increasing new medications which alter my ability to do everyday tasks. This past fall semester was no different, and eventually, I became too frustrated with falling behind due to medication side-effects that I stopped doing school (shortly after reading week I stopped submitting assignments altogether). I reached out to my QSAS advisor to see if there was any way of catching up, but we came to the conclusion that this request was the best course of action.
I have really been struggling these past few years trying to get a handle on my mental well-being alongside school and ultimately I??ve come to the decision that I cannot do both at the same time. Based on my transcript, you can see that when I am well, I am capable of being academically successful, I just need some time to get back to where I was.
Thank you for considering,
Kailee

Academic Plan
Academic Plan: - I want to defer a semester to focus on my mental well-being so that when I do attempt school again, it is not an obstacle.
- I want to change my degree plan to a BA (English minor), this way I only have 18 credits left to complete when I come back.
- I won't take more than 3 courses per semester (therefore only one year left to complete)
- Before returning to my studies, I will have the support system I need and the medications regulated to be successful.
