Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to inquire about appealing how my final STAT 263 grade appears on my transcript, in hopes that it can be marked as CR. I have passed the course, but was unable to demonstrate my knowledge of course material on the exam. I have learned so much during this course, which I have shown in my overall high grades in weekly quizzes as well as the term test. My professor wrote to me in a recent email when discussing my course progress, you did very well on the term test.
STAT 263 was my last in-person exam until Queen's made the switch to virtual exams due to the Omicron crisis. The outbreak was already quite widespread and I was anxious about going to my exam, but went for fear of something going wrong if I tried to defer it (especially because I myself had no symptoms or known exposure. Upon arriving to the exam, I entered in line with many others whom I didn't know. As we went into the basement of Dunning, people were not staying far enough apart from one another. During the exam, there was a student who kept coughing yet was not asked to leave, which was distracting as it's a symptom of covid and I was on-edge already about the new variant. Altogether, I was anxious and unable to focus on the exam itself, barely able to process some of the questions and feeling as though I was going to have a breakdown. I left a lot of the exam blank, though I know based on my consistent performance in previous assessments and ability to perform class homework well I could have done it in different circumstances.
Additionally, I had been on week 4 of my recovery from a concussion; the main head-related symptoms had subsided but I would still regularly experience neck pain from tension. I had been working regularly on this with a physical therapist, but it would always get worse during long desk sittings, thus the tension got worse during the exam. However, I don't believe this had nearly as much a role as the anxiety from the pandemic-related circumstances.
Altogether, I am really unhappy with the experience I had during my exam and wish I could go back and have chosen to defer. Now that I am in this situation of having received a poor grade on an exam worth 60% of my grade, my final course grade is very low. I would be grateful of the opportunity to have CR appear on my transcript instead of the low grade.
