Petition Letter

Petition Letter: Last Semester, towards the end of November, I experienced a severe mental health crisis. This forced me to leave school and go home. During this time I was unable to do school work, and my counsellor recommended that I take time from school and work to relax and focus on improving my mental health after this crisis. My counsellor also recommended that I talk to my professor about ending the semester on the grades that I had at the time, although when I spoke to the professors, many explained that this would not be possible. I worked everything out with my professors so that I would be able to take incomplete and finish the work before the end of the winter semester, however, now that this semester has started, I fear that I will not be able to do this. When I applied for academic consideration in November I thought that by January I would be feeling better and would be able to complete the missed work while also doing my course work for this semester. While I am feeling somewhat better, I am still not back to where I was previously and I am afraid that completing this extra work will create extra stress that will certainly cause me to have another mental health crisis. I have already decided to take a light load this semester, with easy courses, so that I can control my stress levels and focus on improving my mental health. I am nervous that I will not be able to work on this if I have extra coursework from last semester weighing me down. I am hoping to finish off these two courses with the grades that I had and rework the weighting so as to leave out any unfinished assignments. I discussed this further with my counsellor and they feel that this is the best plan moving forward and will help me control my stress levels. I believe that continuing with this counselling and ensuring that I am not overloaded with extra coursework will help me deal with this extenuating circumstance and prevent it from happening again.

Appeal Letter

Appeal Letter: Dear Board of Studies;

I appreciate the nature of this situation and understand that students cannot end a class without completing the learning objectives. However, I feel the situation I am in is quite unique and I did not emphasize this enough.
Last semester, due to extreme stress I became highly anxious and suicidal, to the point where I almost landed myself in the hospital. At this point, myself and my family decided it was best to end the semester and try and focus on my mental and physical health. After the break, I decided that I felt better, and wanted to return. I wanted to take a relatively easy semester with lots of electives and a lighter course load to prevent a similar situation from occurring - this is why I was able to return to school. However, this extra coursework has been weighing on me excessively and I have not been able to complete it. I have noticed myself becoming increasingly stressed and decided to apply for another appeal as I did not want to once again become suicidal and excessively anxious. For both of these classes, I completed AT LEAST 60% of the course work and I feel that I have completed the learning objectives.
I appreciate the offer to drop the courses, however, seeing as I have completed 60% of the work, I feel this is unfair. I had put a lot of work into those courses previously and I don??t want to have all that work to go to waste. Dropping these courses would also mean that I would have to take an extra semester, which I do not have the money to do. I feel it would be extremely unfair if I have to drop these classes. This option is not very feasible as considering it has also brought me extreme stress.
At this point, I see dropping the course or gaining aegrotat standing as my only two options. I cannot complete the coursework, it is not an option. I am disappointed as I felt queens would take a mental health issue more seriously and appreciate a student who is making a conscious effort to take care of themselves while also making an effort to continue their studies. I hope that this appeal will make the situation more clear.
