Petition Letter: I am writing to ask if you would be able to provide me assistance in securing a late drop for one of my courses, English 290. The reason I am contacting you directly is that the Academic Portal is currently closed.
As I believe you are aware from previous correspondence, I was injured on Dec 10th and was in the Emergency department at KGH for a number of hours, extending into the early morning of Dec 11th. My injury was caused by a hit and run by a car. The police were involved, and the side view mirror of the car that hit me was dislodged and directly lacerated my arm. It was a very deep wound, and the opening was severe enough that bone/muscle tissue was exposed.
Because of this injury which impacted my dominant arm, I was unable to lift anything and it was very painful to move the arm. It was initially immobilized by a sling, and I was not able to type or use the arm. I have not been able to work at my part time job since I was injured. Together, the trauma I sustained was extremely upsetting to me emotionally.
I did successfully alert my professors who all granted extensions for my assignments and my exams were deferred. I am very grateful for this assistance. At this time, it appears as though I underestimated my recovery needs from this injury. The stitches are still in place, and I have been seeing a surgeon every week since the stitches could not all come out because of the severity of the wound. I have another appointment on January 5th to see if the final stiches can come out. I thought that it would be a 10-14 day recovery, but it has instead extended to at least a month. I have attached a picture of the wound, half way through the suturing procedure on the injury day and a copy the ER visit.
I have been in contact with Professor Evans ENG 290, copied on this email. While I did my best to try and complete all the course work for ENG 290, Professor Evans indicated to me that she had concerns that I would not pass the course. I made an effort to complete all the course assignments, but it seems unlikely I will be successful in this course, and my recovery has adversely affected my ability to do so.
Under these exceptional circumstances, I am requesting help to have a late drop for ENG 290. Could you kindly advise me if this would be possible?
