Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To the Associate Dean (Academic),

I hope that you are doing well and staying safe.

I am writing this letter to appeal to drop ANAT 315 (Fall, 2021) due to extenuating circumstances.

Immediately prior to the start of the fall term, I was diagnosed with Lyme Disease and began treatment. As Lyme Disease can have serious implications on the body, including major damage to the joints, I found myself preoccupied with worrying about possible long-term complications.

Later in the fall term, the climate of uncertainty surrounding the COVID-19 pandemic began to impact my mental health as well. Although the spread of COVID-19 appeared under control at the beginning of the fall 2021 semester, the spread of Omicron in Kingston and within the student population increasingly caused me to feel fearful and worried later in the semester. While my concerns about COVID and Lyme Disease affected my focus, study habits and performance in all of my classes, ANAT 315, was significantly impacted:

Unlike my other courses, where assessments were distributed throughout the semester, three out of five of the assessments in ANAT315 occurred in late November and early December ?? coinciding with the peak outbreak of Omicron in the Queen??s community. During this time, numerous close friends tested positive for COVID-19 and were in isolation and my housemates began testing themselves obsessively, informing me of new cases each day. In turn, I was increasingly preoccupied with worry about my health and the contagiousness of virus, interfering with my ability to concentrate on my assessments in ANAT 315.

When I arrived to write my final ANAT 315 exam in person on December 9th, I was worried about exposure and unable to concentrate on the material to the best of my ability. The following day an outbreak was officially declared and two days later, in-person exams were cancelled, indicating the severity of the problem.

After returning home for the winter break and spending time away from Queen??s, I have reflected on my experience and received my booster vaccine. Having now recovered from Lyme Disease and COVID-19, I return to school more realistic and less preoccupied about my health and the risks related to the pandemic. Should this appeal be granted, I intend on retaking ANAT315 in Spring or Fall of 2022 and am committed to giving the course the attention it deserves.

Thank you for your consideration,

Samara Green
