Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To Whom It May Concern:

I am writing to appeal my PHYS 118: Basic Physics course standing and apply for a Credit Standing. My name is Megan, and I am a third-year student in the Life Science program. During the Summer of 2020, I decided to register in PHYS 118. Unfortunately, during this period, I faced extenuating circumstances that kept me from meeting my own goals as a student. With the help of doctors and other services, I am at the place where I need to be to be successful as a student in my second and third years. Yet, these circumstances were detrimental to my academic performance, and I am applying for a credit standing for PHYS 118.

Looking back at that period, I wish that I had the experience that I have acquired now as a third-year student knowing how to seek help throughout the University both academically and through other support systems. Yet during this period, I could not access resources for use when I needed it. The workload in which I would normally handle was severely impacted by extenuating circumstances and, more specifically, the effect that COVID-19 had on my family. This took a very severe hit on my mental health and, thus, academic performance for an extended period. From this experience, I have accessed medical help to prevent these circumstances from reoccurring. My situation is a lot better and has allowed me to be at my best, which is reflected in my transcript. I hope that through getting a credit appeal for PHYS 118, the marks that show on my transcript reflect my ability as a student and my circumstances.

Meetings last year with academic advisors unfortunately did not provide me with the idea of credit standing for this issue until recently and I hope to wave the one-term deadline for this appeal. Again, I graciously thank you for allowing me the opportunity to explain my circumstances. Please let me know if there are any more materials I should provide.

Thank you for considering this appeal.

Sincerely,

Megan Crosby
