Petition Letter: Dear, Associate Dean Academic
Faulty of Arts and Science January 19th, 2022
My name is Ravneet Mall (20233607). I am currently a second-year life science student here at Queens University. During the past semester in fall, I struggled with the transition of moving away from home, living alone, and adjusting to the in-person lifestyle like I am sure any other student felt this year. As a student and individual, I am aware of my triggers and have learned how to cope with my anxiety and depression as I was diagnosed in 2019. Triggers and episodes come in waves, and I like to take the responsibility to inform my Teachers and Professors ahead of time to let them know essentially what is going on with my mental health and well-being.
As a student with Accommodations, I always send in my letter and email the professor when needing to use one of my accommodations during my episodes due to anxiety and depression. November 2021 was a month when I deeply struggled with my well-being. As mentioned before, I emailed my professors and TA??s asking for an extension well before the deadline during these extenuating times. From November 2-22 2021, I was in contact with my instructor for PHGY 215 (Dr.Ward). In the email, I had asked him for an extension for my work and outstanding work in specifically, discussion boards. I had emailed him on November 2nd, 2021 and his response letting me know there was no option for me to make up my outstanding work was, November 22nd, 2021. His response was not what I expected as he had said that he was not willing to accommodate my needs even though I had let him know way ahead of time (I have provided screenshots of our emails). With my instructor not on my side, I had felt discouraged, and the anxiety had worsened, where I would try to do the work, but I would completely dissociate. Physically and mentally, I was unable to do my work. Since the drop deadline had passed, I was unable to drop the class, leaving me to appeal this course. I know that as a student, sometimes the instructor will not let you hand in outstanding work or even extend a deadline. But as a student with accommodations and my email that I had sent in advance, I believe with the timeline of Dr wards and I??s communication it was unfair.
