Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to drop two classes: GPHY345 (Spatial Analysis) and GPHY348 (Application Design and Customization in GIS).
In the past 2-3 weeks I have missed several classes and labs due to an extraneous event that took my attention away from school. I have been battling an unexpected legal issue that has been disruptive to my studies and mental health. I am anxious and scared that I will fail my most important courses I need for graduation this upcoming spring. To deal with the stressful event, I have sought consultation with my school counsellor, Kelly Mannen; and my psychiatrist, Dr. O'Brien.
Following the unfortunate event, I have been struggling particularly with my MATH126 (calculus) course. I am currently receiving a 45-55 in the course right now. The Math126 is very important to me and it is required for my degree plan. As I reviewed with my Academic advisor, I need to complete both GPHY207 (Biogeography) and MATH126 (calculus) in order to graduate this upcoming spring.
I would like to appeal to drop both GPHY345 and GPHY348 to allocate more of my time to the two courses I need for graduation: GPHY207 and Math126. I believe by dropping the courses I do not need for graduation, I can therefore catch up on the two courses that I do need for graduation.
Furthermore, if I fail calculus or biogeography it would prevent me from attending Fleming College in September 2015. I received a College acceptance letter for the GIS Application Specialist Post-Graduate Program at Fleming College, under the condition that I obtain my university degree before September 2015.
All in all, the timing of the unexpected legal issues and the workload from five courses has prevented me to fully concentrate in school. I would like to drop GPHY345 and GPHY348, therefore, I can allocate my time and apply my best effort to calculus and biogeography.
I will focus on both biogeography and calculus in order to get my degree and graduate. I will continue to practice calculus every day, and I have a dedicated tutor that is helping me through my struggles in this course. I feel that with more time, I can focus on this course and attend math help sessions when they are open, as well as ask my professor for help. I will also continue to meet with my counsellor and psychiatrist regularly during this stressful time. I will give my best effort to pass the courses I need for graduation and I hope to receive my degree this upcoming spring.
