Petition Letter: Hello,

My name is Helena Hannibal and I am writing to appeal the IN status of HIST125 and HIST260 from the Summer 2021 term.


I first began seeking accommodations during the winter term 2021 as I had been enrolled in a full course load while working full time when unexpectedly I was required to navigate the medical treatment of a family member. In February of 2021, my father suffered a heart attack and underwent a great deal of medical intervention and recovery which included being placed under a medically induced coma and multiple surgery days. Thankfully he has been able to fully recover since, but during this time I moved to my family home out of province to support my family during this process. I was able to complete my courses from this term through the support and flexibility of my professors.
Moving into the Summer 2021 term, I completed the majority of my assignments required for the final few courses of my degree but in the final months I became overwhelmed as further medical complications among my family arose and my own mental health deteriorated. Due to these ongoing challenges as well as increasing stress related to the pandemic, I was unable to complete my final exams during the time allowed from my previous extenuating circumstances extention. As a Con-Ed student, failing to complete these courses also positioned me to defer my final year of teachers college to Fall 2022 which I am determined to follow through with.
After a year of immense stress and pressure, I have really needed this interim time off to reset and support my mental health. I am hoping to be able to revisit these unfinished courses now that I am in a more stable place and am able to write the last few remaining exams for my degree.
I appreciate any guidance the appeal committee may have on how to proceed and welcome any further questions regarding my circumstance.
