Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am writing to you to appeal to drop GPHY 339 past the academic deadline, thereby receiving DR notation on my transcript. I took GPHY 339 during the Fall 2021 term, where before the drop deadline, I was able to keep up with the course work with the help of my approved accommodations. These accommodations allowed me to negotiate extensions on assignments with Dr. Mark Rosenberg, which I found helpful until mid-November. Unfortunately, my depression became very severe during mid-November, after the final drop date, making it difficult for me to get out of bed, make meals, attend class, and complete or hand in my final GPHY 339 assignments on time.
I was diagnosed with major depressive disorder (MDD) in 2018, where my physicians, therapists and psychologist indicated that I was experiencing MDD at a moderate level. Through the use of medication, therapy, exercise and my QSAS accommodations, until this semester, I have been able to manage my disability and succeed in both my courses and non-academic endeavours at Queen's University. For this reason, I did not believe my severe level of depression beginning in mid-November would last well into December and early January, as I have never experienced such severe symptoms of depression for this length of time. During this period in the Fall 2021 semester, I increased the frequency of my therapy from bi-weekly to weekly sessions to improve my low mood and create strategies to manage my course load.
In addition to my diagnosis of MDD at the moderate level, I obtained comorbid diagnoses of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) in the fall of 2020, adding to the complexity of my treatment plan. My health care team includes my family doctor, mental health nurse, psychotherapist and psychologist, and they are currently adjusting my treatment plan to be more suited to my needs. This January, I have started attending group therapy sessions for ADHD, which should contribute to my success in the Winter 2022 semester. I am also adjusting my medication doses and attending a prescribed exercise program, which will be beneficial in enhancing my mental health, and subsequently, my ability to flourish in academia.
As described above, I experienced unusually severe levels of depression which rendered me incapable of completing the necessary work to pass GPHY 339, resulting in my current appeal to drop GPHY 339 past the academic deadline. It is also important to note that I did not drop the course before the drop deadline as my severe level of depression onset afterwards. Thank you for taking the time to understand my situation. I hope to hear from you soon.
Sincerely,
Gabrielle Craddock
