Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: To whom this may concern,

My name is Reese Bambridge, and I am a second-year Arts student with plans to pursue an English major. Due to some recent unforeseen events, I strongly believe that it would be in my best interest to drop ENGL 290 from my transcript.

A couple of weeks before the end of the fall semester, I began suffering from a concussion. I was unable to look at a computer screen or concentrate on anything for even a short period of time. Furthermore, I was instructed by my doctor to rest my brain as much as possible, for as long as possible. As a result, I was unable to complete any of my exams or final assignments during the remainder of the semester, and I was given a long list of assignments to complete during the holiday break. In my ENGL 290 course, I was given an incomplete grade for the time being. Between still recovering and spending time with my family during the holidays, I was able to complete most of my outstanding work. However, by the beginning of the winter semester, I still had three final assignments in my ENGL 290 class alone to complete, on top of my current flow of work.

The constant reminder that these assignments are weighing on me has had an extremely negative impact on my mental health. I feel as though I have reached a point where I cannot move forward. I have also been diagnosed with an anxiety disorder, which certainly elevates these feelings and the situation.

I understand that a book seminar is a compulsory course for English majors, which is why I will be happy to retake the course at a later date (in the spring if possible). After giving it a lot of thought, I am positive that dropping ENGL 290 from my transcript is the right move for me at this time, in order for me to move forward.
