Submit an Academic Petition or Appeal

Petition Letter: Hello. I am writing today to submit an appeal to re-take BCHM218 during the Winter 2022 semester, after extensive communication with and advising from course instructors Dr. Mark Ormiston and Dr. Edmond Chan. I had an extremely difficult first semester in terms of balancing my course work with my academic and athletic commitments, as well as a long period of time in which I was struggling with COVID-infection complications from asthma. I was not at my best this semester, and I completely acknowledge my clear shortcomings in this course. My mark in BCHM218 is drastically different from my other results. Prior to the release of the final grade, I had a 3.6 gpA. My weak performance in this course was uncharacteristic of me as a student, and not at all reflective of the type of student I am or wish to be. I cannot express how disappointed in myself I am.

I understand completely that I brought this mark on myself, but I want to do everything in my power to work harder and improve the outcome.



I am appealing to you for permission to enroll in BCHM218 for W22. I understand that this is unconventional, and that the course is underway already; however, I am hopeful that potentially, my case could be considered extenuating given that the exam was delayed significantly (due to the compromised Dec. exam) and therefore my final mark was only released recently. If I had had prior knowledge of this mark, as I did with my other courses, I would've had time to re-enroll and this course and would've done so; therefore, I felt like I should at least reach out and make the appeal, with the hopes that this is now possible. I am willing to write any tests or complete any assignments that have been written thus far. I would like to drop MICR270, a class in which minimal course-work has been completed to date, because I have already fulfilled by elective requirement and I would like to replace this class with BCHM218. To reinterate and ensure clarity, the BCHM218 exam was originally scheduled for Dec 19 2021; however, a student captured images of the exam, therefore compromising it. The exam was then delayed, past the official delayed exam period for Queen's (Jan 13-16 2022), until Jan 20th 2022. This did not provide me with sufficient time to adjust my course-load based on my final mark in the course, which I did have the opportunity to do based on my other courses, for which the results were released much earlier. Therefore, I believe that this creates grounds for an extenuating circumstance given I was not provided with the required information to inform my course selection during the open period.
