Petition Letter

Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,

My name is Anna Siju and I am a 5th year student here at Queen??s University. I am writing to appeal to pass/fail courses from my 2018 Winter semester at Queen??s. There were extenuating circumstances that were beyond my control that contributed to my low grades.

In my first year, my father was laid off at the beginning of my winter semester, and due to this, I often had to go back home to take care of my three younger siblings. I understand you need documentation, but I??m not too sure what I can get about this situation. If required, I can have my father write a letter and sign it. Due to this, I was overworked and stressed, especially because the transition to university was a difficult one for me, and as a result my mental health suffered. I actively took measures to work on my mental health by speaking to a counsellor at Student Wellness Services and have provided documentation to show this.

My grades suffered and are now hindering my ability to graduate in the spring of 2022. I understand that this request is past the deadline, however I am appealing now because I was not aware of the harm these grades could cause in my ability to graduate. In more recent years I have tried my best to improve my grades, and as a result my overall GPA has risen. I have also been seeing a therapist through student wellness to work on my mental health. I have met all other graduation requirements, and I feel my first-year grades do not reflect my abilities. I will continue to work hard this final semester towards completing my degree.

I would appreciate it if you would consider changing my letter grade to a Pass grade instead for the following courses: MATH 121, MATH 111. The reason why I??m only asking to Pass/Fail these two math courses is because those are the ones preventing me from meeting my requirements.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Anna Siju
