Re: Undergraduate student Joanna Hearn, 10002323

This appeal is being prepared and submitted by Joanna's mother, Anne-Kristine Hearn, as Joanna is not currently capable of doing this appeal herself.

Due to extenuating circumstances, Joanna is appealing to have Aegrotat standing given for the following courses; DRAM 236 and FREN P12 (Winter 2015). The Faculty of Education has already granted the same for PROF 210.

Joanna is appealing for Aegrotat standing rather than asking for extended time to complete the term, as it is necessary for her immediate well-being, and ultimate recovery, to be free of obligations at this point.

Joanna experienced a traumatic personal event in the past which, over the course of this school year, has led to a severe and prolonged illness due to recent triggers, leaving her unable to complete her academic term. While Joanna worked very hard to overcome the trauma and carry on with her studies, she did have to reduce her course load more than once in order to cope.

Several traumatic events have occurred in the last few years, their negative affects only increasing over time, particularly since late fall of 2014. Joanna has sought out medical help and counselling for many months now, but it has been a slow and difficult process. During this time, Joanna has continued to attend and fully participate in classes, as well as complete her assignments and test on time and with excellent results. She had every intention and expectation of completing her term in the same manner. However, carrying on and keeping up appearances took a tremendous toll on her. Despite her best efforts, and those of us supporting her, events came to a crisis point on the weekend of March 20 to 22. Since then, Joanna, has been seriously unwell, and as her doctor indicated in the previously submitted medical certificate, incapable of completing the academic term.

Regarding her future plans, Joanna will have a quiet summer, with no job or courses, focusing on her recovery process, as determined by herself and medical professionals. She expects to be ready to continue her studies in Fall 2015, with on-going support during the school year. She will likely do 3 Arts/Sci courses and 1 B.Ed. course.

Your thoughtful consideration of this appeal is very much appreciated. Thank you for your time.

Anne-Kristine Hearn
