Petition Letter: To whom it may concern,
I am writing to request a credit standing as my final grade for the course CHEM 212, which I took last semester. Due to extenuating circumstances, I was unable to do well on the final examination and failed the lecture portion of the course as a result. As the structure of the course is set up so that one must pass both the laboratory and lecture portions individually, I received a final grade of F in the course.
The extenuating circumstances are as follows: as the date for the CHEM 212 examination approached, I found out a housemate had tested positive for COVID-19 and I was forced to isolate for 14 days. Because of this, along with the sudden postponing of various other evaluations, I was unable to take the examination on the scheduled date, which I had initially put much effort into studying for. During the December exam period, I was able to write one exam, BCHM 218 using remote proctoring on December 20th. After completing the exam it was announced that it had been leaked and I would have to rewrite it in the deferred period. This only added to the stress of studying and keeping up my knowledge for 4 exams during a 4 week period that most students were left in the dark about the next steps for these classes. Since I had to take 4 exams over the course of 5 days all while keeping up with the new semester??s lectures and assignments, I was completely driven by stress and was unable to prepare for these exams to the best of my abilities. Had I been given the fair examination period to prepare for the CHEM 212 exam I am confident I would have been more successful on the examination and surely passed the final exam. Other than doing poorly on the CHEM 212 exam, I was passing all other elements of the course up until this point and felt confident in the class material all semester. After dedicating so much time and effort into this class and finding out so late into this semester about this grade, I feel consideration to have the grade removed is appropriate.
Thank you very much for your consideration of this matter. I would sincerely appreciate having that mark removed from my transcript as it does greatly impact my GPA, and I do not feel that it is a true reflection of my understanding of the course.
