Petition Letter
Petition Letter: Dear Associate Dean,
I am appealing to drop ENGL 100, HIST 105, PHIL 111, PSYC 100, SOCY 122 (all Fall/Winter 2021), and HIST 104 (Fall 2020).
Beginning in October 2020, I suffered from a sudden and extended mental health illness that lasted for many months. I began experiencing extremely low moods and low motivation levels, and this made it difficult to do things such as schoolwork and other daily tasks. By early December 2020, my mental state had made such a steep decline that I had lost sight of my goals and future plans. During the months that followed, I simply only had the energy and willpower to take things one day at a time. With a limited understanding of my condition at the time of the final drop-dates for Fall 2020 and Fall/Winter 2021 term courses, I unfortunately neglected to drop my courses because of my inability to envision a future for myself.
In May of 2021, I began seeking the help of mental health professionals. I met with several different counselors, multiple times each, before I found the right fit for me in July. Ever since, I have met weekly/bi-weekly with my therapist who has helped me better understand why I felt the way I did, and how I can tackle issues like this as soon as they arise from now on. Additionally, I also meet monthly with my doctor to monitor my progress with medication and my overall mental wellbeing.
As for the future, I intend to continue meeting with my therapist on a bi-weekly basis, and my doctor monthly, for the foreseeable future. In terms of academics, I plan on taking a lighter course load (potentially 2-3 in a semester) once my Requirement to Withdraw for one year is over. This way, I can focus on increasing my GPA and making a strong return to my studies, before going back to being a full time student. I am confident that the pairing of a reduced workload, and continued meetings with my therapist and doctor, will set me on the right track to be successful and feel fulfilled in my education once again.
Thank you for reviewing my appeal.
Sincerely,
Luka Mihajlovic
