Re: Academic Appeals Aegrotat Standing
I would like to express my sincere gratitude to you both for taking the time to read this letter and consider my request for Aegrotat Standing in POLS 348 (Fall, 2021), HIST 211 (Fall, 2021) and HIST 313 (Fall, 2021 and Winter, 2022).
I have been undergoing unbearable stress that has had a significant and direct impact on my academic performance during 2021 Fall Semester. I did not understand what was happening at first and thought things would eventually resolve and that I would finish with a strong semester as usual. However, I did not realize that the growing anxiety and stress I was experiencing would intensify into full-blown grief over the death of my younger brother, which occurred when I was only three and for which I was present. I did not realize that having never meaningfully grieved this traumatic event that historical loss could present itself in such an unexpected and severe manner.
As a result, I was compelled to drop a course and have since unenrolled in this semester??s (Winter 2022) courses in order to dedicate myself to recovery and healing. During Fall 2021, I did my very best to keep going under the challenging circumstances with which I was faced and managed to complete one course (POLS 384). I would be deeply grateful were I to be granted Aegrotat Standing or some other mechanism so as to avoid failing grades on my transcript. If you were to review my transcript, you would see that Fall 2021 is a major inconsistency with my prior record at Queen??s and does not follow the trend of solid grades that I have earned up to this point. I am devastated by what has transpired this school year and it would mean so much to me if you were to grant me with Aegrotat Standing.
Should my appeal be granted, my future plans are to complete my academic goals as early as possible. I am exploring an alternate program at Queen??s and am currently meeting with Professor Niki Kaloudas to discuss transition and moving forward. I have a substantial support system in place, including friends, family, and mentors. If necessary, I will access professional support as well. Taking time off school to focus on my recovery has been very healing. I am making progress and am confident that very shortly I will have worked through what has been incapacitating grief and trauma.
